Medieval home put on the market with walls of 1,000-year-old castle on doorstep

A breathtaking home that backs onto the walls of a medieval castle built by William the Conqueror after his Battle of Hastings victory could be yours for £1.25million.

The Moat House sits on the sloped banks of Lincoln Castle and boasts an entrance hall, three reception rooms, a kitchen diner, utility room, pantry, bathroom and cellar on the ground floor alone.

According to JH Walter, the castle is incredibly rare in having two "mottes" – raised banks to protect against enemy invasion, a true sign of its heritage.

The only other example of a property with two "mottes" in England is another ancient build in Lewes, which is between Brighton and Eastbourne.

It is also nestled in the desirable Cathedral Quarter which boasts a variety of restaurants, cafés, butchers, bakery, grocer and various boutique shop.

The area, including the castle, has undergone a £22m restoration, and residents and visitors alike can now uncover 1000 years of history through a medieval walk, tour of a victorian prison and the opportunity to have a glance at the original Magna Carta.

On Rightmove, JH Walter describes the property as a "truly unique opportunity" to purchase a "fine period residence set within touching distance" of the Lincoln Castle walls.
