Met Office verdict on Britain’s big freeze and when snow could hit

Britain is likely to undergo a big freeze with the Met Office predicting a “cold spell forecast” for the coming week as temperatures to shivering -11C.

According to the weather forecast, the first widespread frost of Autumn for much of England and Wales is expected tonight with a further cold spell forecast next week.

The forecaster said: “Temperatures have fallen across much of the UK and the first widespread frost across the majority of the UK is forecast tonight, with lows of -5C possible even in rural parts of southern England. It will remain predominantly dry through Friday and Saturday with any showery rain confined to the east coast.”

Weather maps from WXCharts suggest more frost and icy conditions are expected as we move to the last month of 2023.

Temperature levels are seen to be falling to -11C in some parts of Scotland as the UK officially enters the cold spell of the year.

On December 4, areas like Glasgow and Ayr have a possibility of receiving a snow depth up to 25cm, shows the latest map.

Meanwhile, across the rest of the country, the mercury will also drop below freezing. Areas in and around Newcastle and Cardiff will see mercury levels dropping to -5C during the same day.

Jim Dale, a meterologist with British Weather Services told express.co.uk: “We are short to enter Meteorological winter and the weather looks like playing the game. The precise details have yet to be firmed but universal ice and sporadic snow will feature and not just in the mountains and hilly areas.

“Northern areas of the UK, most prone, could possibly witness five inches of snow in places before it temporarily ends. But for now, it will be difficult to say precisely how much snow will be seen.”

Speaking about the possibility of biting cold conditions as predicted by the weather maps, a Met Office spokesperson told Express.co.uk: “It’s not possible to give a definitive forecast for an exact date in the middle of December at this range.

“However, initial long-range models suggest a likely continuation of cold conditions in early December, with a likely mix of rain, sleet and some snow, which would be more likely over high ground.

“Later in December, there is a chance of wetter conditions developing to the west, but details remain uncertain at this range.”
