Four Russian strategic bombers flying towards the UK’s “area of interest” were escorted away from UK airspace by the RAF after the planes came within 100 miles of UK airspace. The footage comes as a further two bombers were escorted on Thursday morning, bringing the total to six planes in two days intercepted by the British.

Footage taken from inside a Russian plane shows how the RAF stalked up to the wings of two enormous Tu-95 Bear H bombers, which can carry nuclear bombs.

British jets also intercepted two maritime patrol Tu-142 Bear F aircraft over the North Sea after being scrambled from RAF Lossiemouth in Moray, Scotland at around 12:30pm on Wednesday.

The chilling footage also shows a Russian pilot at the controls of one of the planes.

The Tu-95s are believed to have taken off from Engels air base in the south-western Saratov region of Russia.

The footage follows yet another incident on Thursday morning which saw Typhoons forced to scramble from RAF Lossiemouth after two Tu-95 Bear F aircraft darted towards the UK.

The fighter jets, supported by a Voyager air-to-air refuelling tanker from RAF Brize Norton in Oxfordshire, intercepted the aircraft before they could reach UK airspace.

Once in contact, the RAF managed to escort the bombers away from the coast of Scotland, according to a spokesman.

Following the incident, a spokesman said: “Quick Reaction Alert Typhoon fighters based at RAF Lossiemouth supported by a Voyager from RAF Brize Norton were scrambled today against aircraft approaching the UK area of interest.

“Subsequently we intercepted and escorted two RussianTu-95 Bear F aircraft.”

The Russian military have claimed Thursday’s incident was part of a planned flight in the airspace over the neutral waters of the Barents Sea, the Norwegian Sea and the northeastern Atlantic Ocean.

The Russian airforce said the Tu-95 planes were in the air for an astonishing 15-hours on Wednesday, made possible by a mid-air refuelling.

A report from the Russian military said: “In the course of the flight, the crews of Tu-95 aircraft practiced aerial refuelling. The flight time was about 15 hours.

“At some stages of the route, the Russian strategic missile carriers were accompanied by Eurofighter Typhoon fighters of the British Air Force.”

The Tu-95, which first took to the skies 70-years ago, is the only propeller-powered strategic bomber still in operational use today.

The incursions came just hours after a phone call between Russian President Vladimir Putin and British Prime Minister Boris Johnson following soaring tensions over the threat of a Russian invasion of Ukraine. Russia currently have over 100,000 troops stacked up on Ukraine’s border, the UK have vowed to support Ukraine with military assistance in the face of war.
