Murder detectives take over missing woman case as last sighting confirmed

Murder detectives have taken over the investigation of a missing woman as police confirm her last known sighting.

Sarah Everard, 33, has not been seen or heard from since leaving her friend's house in Clapham, south London, at around 9pm on Wednesday.

The Met Police’s Specialist Crime Command, which deals with homicides and major crime, is now leading the investigation due to its ‘complex nature’ and concerns for her welfare.

But police said it is still being treated as a missing person’s enquiry.

She vanished after she set off to walk to her home in nearby Brixton, a journey which should have taken around 50 minutes.

Her family say "it is totally out of character for her to disappear like this”.

Detectives have now confirmed she was last seen walking alone at about 9.30pm on the A205 Poynders Road, the South Circular, after fresh CCTV emerged.

A CCTV image – understood to have been discovered on a private doorbell-type camera – captured her walking in the direction of Tulse Hill, which lies south of Brixton.

Detective Chief Inspector Katherine Goodwin said: "I would like to stress that there is no information at this stage to suggest anything untoward may have happened to Sarah.

"The focus remains on returning her home to her family safe and well and that is our number one priority.”

Officers are combing the area for clues, including searching ponds on Clapham Common.

They are also carrying out house-to-house inquiries to establish if there were any further sightings of her.

She was also thought to have been wearing a white beanie hat and green earphones.

Sarah is described as 5ft 4in, of a slim build and with blonde hair.

In a statement, her family said: "With every day that goes by we are getting more worried about Sarah.

“She is always in regular contact with us and with her friends and it is totally out of character for her to disappear like this. We long to see her and want nothing more than for her to be found safe and well.

"We are so grateful to the police and all our friends for all they are doing.”

Her family urged anyone with information to contact the police.
