Lancashire Police has been accused of “victim blaming” after releasing details of missing mum Nicola Bulley's issues with alcohol and menopause.

Nicola, 45, was walking her dog when she went missing on Friday, January 27, near the River Wyre in Lancashire.

She had dropped her children off at school that morning before taking the family pup, Willow, on a walk.

The mum, whose phone was found at the scene of her disappearance and logged into a work conference on Teams, is believed to have approached the river – the search has now stretched to as far as Morecambe and Fleetwood areas.

But in a bizarre press conference yesterday (February 15) – which featured Lancashire Police telling everyone to “stop speculating” while hitting out at the media – Superintendent Rebecca Smith divulged another piece of information previously kept hidden from the public.

She said that the search for Nicola was made a priority because she was classed as “high risk”.

However, when pressed by a myriad of journalists as to what that means, she refused to go into detail.

Yet, just a few hours later it was made public that she had been dealing with alcohol issues, as well as going through menopause.

The decision to release this information to the public after more than 20 days of searching has been slammed by many, including Conservative MP Alicia Kearns.

She said: “I am deeply uncomfortable with the police releasing Nicola Bulley's so-called 'vulnerabilities' on menopause and alcohol.

“I struggle to ascertain how this will assist Police in their search and investigations.

“I do see how it would assist those wishing to victim-blame or diminish.”

And LBC host Nick Ferrari said this morning: “Why would they do this?

“This takes my breath away, that they are sharing this level of detail.”

Petronella Wyatt tweeted: “The Lancashire Police have just clarified, saying Nicola Bulley had 'issues with alcohol' brought on by the menopause.

“This is horrible, should not have been made public, and certainly doesn’t mean there was no one else involved.

“Police making excuses for their incompetence.”

The police's search for Nicola continues.

The Daily Star has contacted Lancashire Police for a comment.
