Prince William has taken on the role as Princess Diana's 'successor' in the public eye since Harry's shock exit from the Royal Family, a commentator has claimed.
According to royal expert Daniela Elser writing for News.com.au, it is however his valiant charity work rather than Harry's 'cheeky chappie' persona or good looks that has gained him this new status.
She claimed that William's own period as a heartthrob was only enjoyed for a "brief" period in his youth when he still had a full head of hair.
But instead of being a "dishy male replica of his mother" as he was in those few years, she says it is his public support of causes like the Earthshot Prize, the Royal Foundation and the homeless charity Centrepoint which has seen him follow an "ambitious, straying-from-the-royal-path strategy" that she called "positively Diana-esque".
Dubbing the new-look Prince "William The Vulnerable", she claimed that his recent activity broke with a more unadventurous public perception of him in the past, writing:
"Not so long ago, William’s public persona was characterised by a certain rigidity and taciturn quality. It was his younger brother Prince Harry and his ever-present cheeky grin who seemed like their mother’s natural heir apparent, cuddling babies, enchanting crowds and making the camera fall in love with him again and again and again.
"It was the younger prince who broke royal ground speaking to journalist Bryony Gordon in 2017 about his experience of mental health issues and it was he who had put out a highly unusual and personal press release the year before in 2016 when it emerged he was dating Suits star Meghan Markle."
"However, what William has done recently, and seems intends to continue doing, is humanising himself and opening himself up to the people."
She went on to say that William's new vulnerable side would be a healthy development for the Royal Family as an institution, as it would allow him to connect emotionally with the public more effectively than previous monarchs when he eventually becomes King.
