Royal Family broke tradition to keep Prince William and Kate Middleton together
Prince William was the driving force behind ensuring Kate Middleton's family were an active part of their lives, according to royal experts.
The Prince, second in line to the throne, has received widespread praise for his honesty with both Kate and the rest of the Middeltons before and after the pair married in April 2011.
Channel 5's Royal documentary: 'When the Middletons Met the Monarchy', is centred around the Middletons' relationship with the Royal Family.
It touches on how Prince William had discussions with The Queen over how he was keen to ensure Kate’s family were heavily involved in proceedings.
This is something that is extremely uncommon, with most outside families left excluded by the royals.
Royal expert Katie Nicholl told the doc: "Carol and Michael Middleton have been guests of the Queen before.
"I think William's wish that the Middletons be included rather than excluded has very much been listened to by the Queen.
Ms Nicholl went on to reveal how William made himself available to the Middletons round the clock. She said: "William sat down with them and explained how things would change.
"He made sure that he was there for him, Carol and Michael Middleton had William's number in their phones.
"This was just so they could call him if they needed him."
Royal family’s sweet and strange nicknames for each other – from Squeak to Wombat
The documentary highlights just how vital this was for Kate herself, helping her adjust to the new title of Duchess of Cambridge.
Royal commentator Robert Jobson said: "I think it was good for Kate that her family was welcomed.
"It was important for her as well because otherwise she would have been isolated.
"The last thing the Royal Family would want after seeing what happened with Princess Diana was isolation."
William and Kate have enjoyed a strong marriage since they tied the knot in 2011, and they have three children: Prince George, Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis.
Offering a new, modernised approach and outlook to the Royal Family is one of Kate and Will's strongest assets, and Kate's family have been a vital part of that.
