Ukraine has discovered a torture chamber in the newly-liberated city of Kherson known to the Russians as the “children’s cell”. Russia forces reportedly mistreated and abused minors in the chamber, only giving them water every other day, practically no food at all and putting psychological pressure on them, according to officials. One 14-year-old boy subjected to this treatment was arrested simply for taking a photo of broken Russian equipment. Dmytro Lubinets, the Ukrainian parliament’s commissioner for human rights, who announced the findings, said he had seen the “rock bottom” of Kherson. He added: “We have documented that the children were not provided with water, were given water every other day. They were practically not given food.” He said they had also been told reports of Russian forces telling children their parents had abandoned them and would not return. At least 10 torture chambers have been found by officials in Kherson.

  • Putin prepares to launch fresh assaults on new territories ahead of key date

Heavy fighting in the Donbas waged on through Wednesday and into Thursday morning as Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said there was no break from the conflict.

He said the Russians were intent on the “destruction of everything in front of them with artillery so that only bare ruins and craters in the ground remain” as military analysts suggest

Putin’s forces are about to launch several assaults on territories in the occupied zones.

Putin is reportedly looking for some battlefield success in time for the anniversary of the war next February, while Ukraine is looking to take advantage of the hard winter ground to make advances towards Crimea using mechanised warfare.

Belarus ‘unlikely’ to join Russian invasion

Belarus are “unlikely” to take part in the invasion of Ukraine because they are not “capable of conducting a new assault” in the north, the British Ministry of Defence has said.

On Tuesday, Belarus carried out a “snap combat readiness inspection”, allegedly on the orders of President Alexander Lukashenko, speaking fears that the Russian ally would involve themselves in the war.

Russian soldiers advanced on Ukraine from southern Belarus at the start of the invasion and have fired missiles from within Belarussian territory, but thus far none of Lukashenko’s soldiers have fought in an official capacity with the Russians.

The exercises announced earlier this week will take place in the north-west of the country, according to the MoD, “away from the Ukrainian border”.

It acknowledged, however, that “Russia has recently deployed extra units of mobilised reservists to Belarus”.

The statement added: “Belarus played a key enabling role in Russia’s assault towards Kyiv from 24 February 2022. However, the exercising Belarusian troops and Russian units are currently unlikely to constitute a force capable of conducting a successful new assault into northern Ukraine.”
