The September just gone has been declared the "hottest in history" in the UK – and October might smash the same record.

Staggeringly, weather forecasters say 30C "can't be ruled" this month as heatwave conditions are expected.

Exacta Weather forecaster James Madden said: "The UK has just experienced the hottest September in its history, with average maximum temperatures of 22C, up from the previous record of 20.9C set in 1895." It comes after a record-breaking June.

And conditions don't look to be cooling off anytime soon as this coming weekend is set to be a scorcher. According to Madden, weather models suggest "a substantial area of high pressure" is headed our way and will bring "a significant rise in temperatures for many parts of the country".

He said southern regions are "likely" to see temperatures in the mid to high-20Cs. Even further north temperatures could hit the mid-20Cs. Madden added: "In addition to this we could also see some additional record-breaking weather for the time of the year, and 30C also can't be ruled out as we head into this weekend."

Moreover, Madden said "another warm to hot spell could develop around mid-October" before conditions are expected to cool down and become typical for this time of year.

Netweather forecast Ian Simpson has also said the mercury could spike this coming weekend. He reckons we are unlikely to get a "direct hit" of warm air from Europe during the week, but added: "There is some potential for more of that unusually warm air to reach the British Isles next weekend.

"We may end up with temperatures in the mid to high-20Cs quite widely."

The Met Office said: "Temperatures are likely to be above average for many, especially so in the south where some unusually warm temperatures for October are possible." Although, the national weather agency reckons conditions will cool off towards the middle of the month.
