Tesco issues urgent recall of £2.85 cottage pie for babies over concerns it contains pieces of blue plastic

• Tesco is recalling its Cottage Pie Baby Food from its shelves over plastic fears
• It is feared that the £2.85 product could contain small pieces of blue plastic
• An ‘unsafe to eat’ alert has today been put out by the Food Standards Agency
• Tesco is urging customers to return the product if it has a June 12, 2022 expiry
• It comes after another alert was issued for blue plastic in a Nestle formula feed 

Parents across Britain have today been put on alert over fears that one of Tesco’s baby food products may contain plastic.

The supermarket is today recalling its own-brand organic Cottage Pie Baby Food over concerns that the product may contain small pieces of blue plastic.

Tesco say the contaminant may make the food ‘unsafe to eat’ for children and has today urged customers ‘please do not use this product’.  

Alarmingly, it is the second such recall involving shreds of blue plastic in baby food in the last two months.  One in April involved a ‘formula’ feed made by Nestle. 

The latest alert, issued by the Food Standards Agency (FSA), involves the 190g product, which sell for £2.85 and have a best before date of June 12, 2022.

Parents who have already bought it have been told not to feed it to their babies. 

‘The possible presence of plastic makes this unsafe to eat’ warned the FSA.

Tesco is recalling the cottage pies and advises any parents who have bought the product to return it to the store from where it was bought for a full refund. No receipt is required, the supermarket say.

A notice from the supermarket giant says ‘Tesco apologises to our customers for any inconvenience caused.’

The supermarket say the plastic may make the food ‘unsafe to eat’ for children and have today urged customers ‘please do not use this product’

The plastic contamination could have happened at the food production stage when various basic ingredients are added.

Alternatively, it could have slipped in when the containers including tubs, tins and boxes are manufactured. 

In April a similar blue plastic warning went out about a popular ‘formula’ feed for babies which was urgently recalled from Tesco, Waitrose and other major supermarkets by safety experts.

Stores across Britain were told to pull the suspect tubs of Nestle UK’s SMA Wysoy Infant Formula from the shelves.

Formula is usually given to infants who have an intolerance to cows’ milk or can’t have breast milk.

The Food Standards Agency said at the time ‘Some cans have been found to contain pieces of blue plastic.

‘It makes this product unsafe to eat and presents a potential choking hazard to babies.’

The tubs sell for about £12 to £13 depending where you shop.

Morrisons’ website said ‘SMA Wysoy is a nutritionally complete soya infant formula for babies and young children with a cows’ milk intolerance, when they are not being breastfed.

‘It can be used as the sole source of nutrition for formula-fed babies in the early months and can be mixed with foods once weaning has begun and your baby gets older.

‘It is suitable for milk protein intolerance, lactose and sucrose intolerance, galactosaemia and galactokinase deficiency.

‘Halal certified, suitable for vegetarians.’
