Theresa May blasted by activists after appointing anti-abortion MP Maria Caulfield as new vice-chair for women

THERESA MAY sparked a furious backlash yesterday after appointing an MP who recently opposed a law fully decriminalising abortion as the Tory Party’s vice chair for women.

Maria Caulfield – named as one of 13 new vice chairs in the Conservative ranks – said the move which is backed by doctors' groups would lead to “abortion on demand”.

The Women’s Equality Party leader Sophie Walker said Ms Caulfield could “never advocate effectively” for women.

The dismayed British Pregnancy Advisory Service (BPAS) said it was “shocked” an MP who “supports the criminalisation of women who end their own pregnancies” could be appointed to such a role.

Maria Caulfield – the MP for Lewes – still shifts twice a month as a cancer nurse at the Royal Marsden in London.

Campaigners last year pushed for changes to the law to decriminalise women who end pregnancies without permission.
