Thousands of people seemingly broke coronavirus lockdown rules in India to attend a funeral – for a horse.

Footage shows up to 2,000 people walking next to one another, mostly without masks, at the ceremony in Karnataka state in the south west of the country on Sunday.

Other clips showed the corpse of a black and white horse covered in flowers and decorations while someone blessed the animal.

The funeral took place on the same day the state’s death toll from the virus hit its highest daily record of 626.

A local said: ‘It’s a complete flouting of all Covid-19 restrictions which were put into force.’

The home minister of Karnataka, Basavaraj Bommai, said the state’s borders will now be closed.

It remains in lockdown until at least June 7.

Laxman Nimbargi, superintendent for the district, said: ‘The village has been sealed for a fortnight.

‘The RT-PCR tests will be conducted on a large scale to curb the virus which had already wreaked havoc.’

The horse had reportedly died a few days after being released from an ashram – a spiritual centre – to help alleviate the coronavirus crisis.

It comes after an Indian couple chartered a flight and got married on a plane to ‘get round’ Covid-19 restrictions.
