NatWest blamed an ‘ongoing incident with cash deposit machines’ for the blunder which left many out of pocket.

A number of people took to social media site X, formerly Twitter, to complain about their missing money – some insisting compensation should be paid.

Customer Ellie Regan said not being able to access her money had ‘hugely interrupted’ her holiday and demanded to know when the error would be rectified.

‘Days have been ruined and many children are likely to have gone hungry. This isn’t a little mistake this is a big f***-up.’

Some customers expressed concerns they would accrue fees after the issue resulted in their accounts being overdrawn.

One X user said they were more than £900 into their overdraft, despite depositing £1,000 on Tuesday afternoon – which was now ‘gone’.

They added: ‘We better not be getting overdraft fees cause of your system failed.’

Another X user demanded: ‘Where is my money?’

‘I deposited money in branch yesterday and this morning it wasn’t there. I don’t need this kind of headache,’ Daniel Broadbent added.

Another took to X to say: ‘This is why you can’t trust banks. All my transactions were affected due to your incompetence.’

In a statement the bank said: ‘Cash payments to a small number of accounts have been delayed.

‘The issue is now resolved and customer accounts are being updated.

‘No customer will be left out of pocket as a result.’
