Three people have been killed and at least six others are injured after a teenage boy opened fire on his fellow students at a Michigan high school.

The "horrifying" killing spree at Oxford High School reportedly took place over just five minutes on the first day back after the Thanksgiving break.

Over 100 frantic calls were placed to 911 operators as more than 20 shots were fired.

The death toll currently stands at three, with five students and a teacher wounded in the attack.

The suspected shooter, a 15-year-old student at the school, was arrested shortly afterwards.

Michigan senator Rosemary Bayer said in a statement: "The news of today's school shooting at Oxford High school is simply horrifying.

"On top of an already difficult situation with the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, our students now have to face this traumatic situation in a place that is supposed to be a safe space for students and growth."

Tributes have started to pour in online as people express their "heartbreak" over the mass shooting.

One person said on Twitter: "My heart goes out to the kids & parents in the Oxford high school community."

While another person wrote: "To the students and staff at Oxford High School, and the families and others in the Oxford community; sincere prayers and thoughts of support to you all, in this time."
