High pressure from the Atlantic, where the Azores are located, could help send temperatures soaring in August following a dreary end to this month. The latest heat maps from Netweather show 27C hitting Kent and London on Friday, August 13, while Hertfordshire, Essex, Manchester and the Yorkshire Dales bake in 26C. Temperatures could rise even further a day later as 28C hits London, Kent, Norwich and Essex on Saturday, August 14.

Brian Gaze, a forecaster at Weather Outlook, said high pressure from the Azores could potentially help temperatures hit the upper 20Cs in the coming weeks.

He told Express.co.uk: “There are tentative signs of an improvement in the weather during the middle third of August.

“High pressure may build towards the UK from the Azores, but there is a lot of uncertainty about this.

“If it happens temperatures in southern and central areas could climb towards the upper 20Cs and in the north the mid 20Cs.”

Mr Gaze’s monthly forecast also added “very warm periods” could arrive towards the end of the month.

He said: “In the first half of August, mixed with showers or longer periods of rain but also warm and fine spells.

“The driest weather will probably be in the south and east, but a heightened risk of heavy showers or thunderstorms means local variations could be large.

“Temperatures should be above average when aggregated over the period as a whole. In the second half, the chance of settled and very warm periods increases.

“Showery spells of rain are still probable, particularly in the north and west.”

Met Office spokeswoman Nicola Maxey predicted “hotter spells” to sweep across the nation in August.

She told Express.co.uk: “The start of the month is expected to remain changeable with temperatures most likely close to normal for the time of year or slightly below.

“During the second half of the month there is a tentative signal for more settled conditions to develop with high pressure becoming slightly more likely.

“If this does occur we could see drier conditions, although there is still the risk of showers or thunderstorms at times, and temperatures could warm up from the middle of the month, giving an increasing chance some hotter spells could develop.

“It is too early to say if these temperatures will reach heatwave thresholds.”

The BBC’s long-range forecast also said mixed conditions could strike at the start of the month, before “summer-like weather” arrives.

The forecast said: “More frequent Atlantic weather fronts are expected as we head into August which will make the weather rather changeable day-to-day.

“There is likely to be a few drier, sunnier, and warmer days mixed in between fronts, but these will not tend to last too long.

“However, later in August there are growing signals for more influential high pressure, so we may see more summer-like weather to close out the month.

“We expect that low pressure will be shifting more to the north of Europe later in August which should gradually allow for high pressure to dry things out and bring some warmer, sunny days for late August.

“This should be a slow process, but for the second half of the month we are forecasting a greater likelihood of some drier, sunnier weather.”
