After what was a relatively mild Christmas and New Year, January has also been seasonably warm. But as the first month of the year comes to an end, February is expected to bring freezing temperatures and some snow in the lead up to Valentine’s Day.

According to latest WX Charts, up to nine inches (23cm) of snow is expected to fall in Inverness and the Scottish Highlands by midday on February 12.

Newcastle and the north of England could see up to 1.5 inches (4cm) of snow falling during the same time.

Manchester and some of the Midlands can also expect at least 1cm of snow falling, while the rest of the country remains cold but free of snow.

By midday on February 13, the snow around Manchester and the north of England is likely to have melted.

But for the Scottish Highlands, up to six inches (16cm) will fall throughout the day and into the night.

Couples waking up in Inverness and the Highlands on Valentine’s Day will be able to enjoy romantic strolls through the snow as a further 5.5 inches (14cm) is predicted.

The snow prediction comes as temperatures in the Scottish Highlands are forecast to plummet to -8C by 6am on February 11.

The freezing temperatures will continue down the rest of country, with Newcastle and the north of England expecting -1C.

The Midlands and the south of England – including London – will also see temperatures of around 0C.

However, as the snow begins falling, temperatures are expected to become slightly milder.

By 6am on February 12, temperatures in the Highlands will remain below zero but around -4C.

For the north of England, forecasters predict the weather will remain cold with temperatures of around 0C.

London and the south east of England will be above zero at around 2C.

By February 16, temperatures across the whole country will remain cold but above 0C.

The Met Office’s long range forecast for February 5 to February 14 predicted: “A north/south divide is expected to continue through the rest of the period with settled conditions and milder temperatures prevailing in the south, whilst unsettled and wetter conditions with strong winds are seen across northern regions, especially the northwest, with near average temperatures.

“Some, mostly short-lived, spells of colder temperatures are likely in the north and northwest, where some wintry showers could develop.”

For the rest of the month, they predict the north/south split will continue from mid-February through to the second half of the month.

They forecast: “The current north-south split to the weather is likely to continue from mid-February and through to the second half of the month.

“Northern areas, especially the northwest, are likely to see nearer average temperatures with more rain and strong winds interspersed with a few short-lived colder spells.

“Southern regions are likely to see milder, drier and overall, more settled conditions.”
