While the UK is forecast to have a settled start to the week, with dry conditions for much of the UK on Monday and Tuesday, rain and even snow are expected later this week. A dip in temperatures, which could drop below freezing in places, could also concern morning commuters with dangerous frost and freeze.

Accuweather meteorologist Robert Richards told Express.co.uk: “A cold front will move across the region on Wednesday causing snow showers across the Scottish Highlands.

“Temperatures will also drop behind this front with many locations in the hills of the Midlands, northern England and Scotland getting to zero Celsius or colder for nighttime low temperatures Wednesday into Saturday.

“The colder low temperatures wait until Thursday night and Friday night to affect the London area.

“There will be frost and freeze concerns due to the colder temperatures later this week across much of the UK.”

This comes after a week of dense fog and icy conditions across much of England.

However, Scotland saw much milder weather.

Fog is not expected to be as significant a factor in this week’s weather.

Mr Richards said: “Fog should not be a big concern throughout the week.”

But the meteorologist did suggest conditions would be drier on Monday and Tuesday.

“Monday and Tuesday look dry for much of the UK,” he said.

“There will be a few showers across northern and western Scotland on Tuesday.”

The Met Office’s longer-range forecast suggests unsettled weather for the remainder of January will most likely be confined to areas in the north of England.

It said: “Through Friday and into the weekend it is expected to be dry for many but often rather cloudy, with some light rain at times in the far north.

“For the rest of the period high pressure is likely to dominate, particularly in the south of the country, resulting in drier and more settled weather with the possibility of overnight frost and fog which may linger through the day.

“Any unsettled weather is likely to be in the north and northwest with rain at times but otherwise predominately dry. It will also be windy in the north at times.

“Temperatures are expected to be around or slightly above average, although colder where fog persists by day.”
