Brits may be treated to uncharacteristically mild weather in the countdown to Christmas Day as forecasters expect temperatures to climb this week before wintry weather arrives at the weekend.
Temperatures on Thursday in southern areas of England and Wales will climb to 14C while northern parts stay slightly chillier, according to new meteorological predictions.
The Met Office forecast for Wednesday night reads: "Rain at times for many places. This most persistent over northern Scotland with some snow over high ground and risk of freezing rain at first. Temperatures mostly rising overnight."
Going into Thursday the national forecaster expects bright conditions in the south and "milder" conditions than earlier in the week for most.
Jim Andrews, a meteorologist from AccuWeather.com meanwhile told Express.co.uk: “Temperature-wise, UK weather is going to be on a bit of a rollercoaster ride this week.
“A chilly cyclone will slowly bow out on Tuesday and Wednesday, allowing the leading edge of a sprawling Atlantic depression to spread cloud and some rain eastward.
“This shift to wet will begin on Wednesday in Northern Ireland and western Scotland, then elsewhere on Wednesday night and Thursday.
It comes as speculation grows over the possibility of a legendary 'White Christmas' on Saturday.
Met Office meteorologist Annie Shuttleworth told the PA news agency that the "most likely" place to see snow is hilly areas in northern parts of the UK.
She added that "you couldn’t rule out some sleety snow further south than that", but said there remains "a really big question mark on it.”
Birmingham is now the latest UK location to go odds-on at bookies to see snow this Christmas, with it now just a 10/11 shot that the Second City sees snow on Saturday.
Elsewhere, Edinburgh remains the most likely city at 2/5, with Newcastle currently being a 4/6 shot.
Alex Apati of Ladbrokes said: "As we edge closer to Saturday, it's looking increasingly likely that several parts of the UK will be treated to a White Christmas."
