UNDER fives are most at risk of being killed or injured by dogs, surgeons have warned.
The age group accounts for half of all attacked children, with three-year-olds bitten the most.
Two-thirds are attacked on the face or neck, which are usually at the same level as a dog’s mouth, Alder Hey Children’s Hospital surgeons in Liverpool said.
And some 87 per cent of the hospital’s dog victims were attacked by a canine they knew.
Consultant plastic surgeon Christian Duncan warned "there is no such thing as a safe dog".
Richard Wain, consultant plastic surgeon at Royal Preston Hospital, also told the Mirror: "We are seeing more and more dog bites.

"The severity is not necessarily getting worse, but the vast majority are in children, usually on their face, limbs or hands.
“We’ve had cases over the past couple of years where patients have had parts of their face removed, eyes chewed out, arms broken, fingers taken off. We have had some really severe injuries.”
There have been several deadly dog attacks across Britain in recent years.
Schoolboy Jack Lis died last November when a dog attacked him while playing with a friend in Caerphilly, South Wales.

And one-year-old Bella-Rae Birch died of a head injury when she was killed by the family dog.
She was mauled to death at her home by the American Bully XL, a legal breed.
The family bought the dog just a week before the attack in St Helens, Merseyside.
Earlier this week it was revealed a mum begged her daughter to get rid of her dog before it killed her.
