Watch out Dilyn! Rishi Sunak takes delivery of his new red Labrador puppy Nova who will rival Boris Johnson’s Jack Russell next door

  • Chancellor Rishi Sunak welcomed eight-week-old Labrador Nova into the family
  • After taking a liking to Boris’s dog Dilyn, Rishi’s daughters urged him to get one
  • A source says Mr Sunak had tried to put it off but gave in to the pleas in the end
  • Family will hope Nova is better behaved than Dilyn who has previously left the Prime Minister with hefty repair bill after chewing antique furniture at Chequers

Downing Street is getting another dog as Chancellor Rishi Sunak has brought home a new puppy.

The eight-week-old red Labrador called Nova posed for a photo with his owner inside Mr Sunak’s office yesterday.

According to the Sun, his children had been urging him to get a dog after they took a liking to the Prime Minister’s Jack Russell Dilyn.

A No11 source told the newspaper: ‘Rishi was fighting it but finally gave in, and the whole building is cooing over him.’

The puppy is a fan of roast chicken and napping in his owner’s red budget box.

Rishi will be hoping his newest family member is better behaved than neighbour Dilyn who has become a regular feature since Boris Johnson and Carried adopted him in 2019.

The two-year-old dog, who was rescued from a puppy farm, has made the headlines for all the wrong reasons since arriving in Downing Street.

Earlier this year, the Prime Minister’s pet had chewed on antique furniture and books at Chequers, as well as making a mess on the floor.

Mr Johnson was left with a hefty bill and told friends he had to foot the bill for ‘making things good’.

That same month, the dog sparked a row in Downing Street by cocking a leg over a senior aide’s handbag in the No 10 garden.

Dilyn will now have to share the garden with Nova, Rishi’s new dog, as the total number of canines at Downing Street now equals the number of cats.
