Wetherspoons to build new boozer in old strip club – but there’s a catch

A new Wetherspoons is set to open in an unlikely location – a former London strip club – and locals are not happy about it.

Permission was on Thursday, August 17, granted by Camden Council for the pub chain to open The Captain Flinders, on Eversholt Street.

The new boozer is set to open inside the venue of a former gentleman’s club SophistiCats, although no date has yet been set.

SophistiCats shut in February 2022 when a customer complained they had lost £50,000 in just two hours.

It was said on Google reviews to have previously played host to "extremely attractive girls", "the most fabulous dancers" and even "the most beautiful girls in the world".

Work on the venue at Eversholt Street and Doric Way, near Euston Station, has been announced by the chain to begin on September 11.

The new pub is expected by the chain to create 60 jobs and will be titled after Captain Flinders who was credited with naming Australia and whose remains were found nearby during work for HS2.

Camden Council has approved opening times from 6.30am on Mondays to midnight on Mondays to Thursdays and until 1am on Fridays and Saturdays, with alcohol sold from 8am.

JD Wetherspoon chief executive John Hutson said: “We are looking forward to starting development work on the new pub.

“We are confident it will prove an asset to the area.”

However, concerns have been raised by locals about added noise in the area, especially over fears of it merging with the queues from nearby Roti King.

Councillor Edmund Frondigoun told Wetherspoons: “Please treat it as a pub in a residential area, there is a very vibrant community here which needs to be respected as well.”

JD Wetherspoon legal director Nigel Connor said in return: “We don’t approach our venues on a cookie-cutter basis and we have experience of pubs in residential areas,” adding trained door staff would be present.

“It is rare that we get complaints from residents – if they do arise, we take appropriate action.”
