Reports have surfaced the RAF has been engaged in “unusual” operations in the sea near the venue where the event is taking place. Sea and air forces from the combined G7 nations are conducting exercises to protect against a possible threat from Russia, according to US media. The reports claim air forces from the combined nations have been conducting “unusual” operations off the coast where the G7 event is taking place.
On Wednesday suspicions were raised that a Russian vessel may be operating in the area, according to the Washington Examiner.
on the evening of Wednesday, the Royal Navy’s HMS Northumberland was observed operating an anti-sub search patrol in the area.
HMS Northumberland is equipped with the highly advanced Sonar 2087 system that has the ability to detect Russian submarine forces.
Reports suggested Russia’s newest Yasen-class nuclear attack-cruise strike submarine fleet could be operating in the area.
Two of these advanced submarines, the Kazan and the Severodvinsk, could be conducting a worrying operation.
Military observers have reported heightened activity made by the US Navy aircraft, British sea and air forces, and French anti-submarine aircraft since the start of the week.
At the beginning of the week, before world leaders arrived at the location, a French surveillance aircraft, a Beechcraft Super King Air 350, was operating in the area.
The aircraft was joined by a British Super King 350 attached to either the Royal Air Force or the local Navy detachments.
UK armed forces have placed a ‘ring of steel’ around the event with the recently built British aircraft carrier HMS Prince of Wales having been deployed to defend the seaside location.
The UK has also deployed the Royal Air Force P-8 Poseidon.
The Poseidon MRA1 (P-8A) is constructed by the US-based Boeing company and is a multi-role maritime patrol aircraft.
The aircraft is equipped with sensors for anti-submarine warfare.
It is one of the UK’s foremost surveillance aircraft.
This deployment is 500 miles from its original RAF base at Lossiemouth in Scotland.
This year’s G7 summit is at Carbis Bay in Cornwall and began on Friday and ends on Sunday, June 13.
In 2014 Russia was indefinitely suspended from the group formerly known as the G8 after Moscow’s annexation of the Crimea.
The Group of Seven, G7, now consists of Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, the United Kingdom, and the US.
