Youngest victims of ice lake tragedy were brothers and dad of one boy dived in

Two boys who were among four children to tragically lose their lives after falling through the ice of a frozen lake were brothers.

A "frantic" father of one of the four victims also entered the lake in a desperate attempt to save them, it has been revealed.

The youngest victims, aged six and eight, had been playing near an icy lake in Babbs Mill Park, Solihull on December 11 when the heartbreaking incident unfolded.

Two other boys, aged 10 and 11, were confirmed to have lost their lives in the tragedy on Sunday, while the eight-year-old died in the early hours of the morning on December 12.

A six-year-old boy then became the fourth victim to have lost his life in the incident yesterday, the boy had been in critical condition in hospital since Sunday but West Midlands Police confirmed last night that he has "lost his fight for life".

A GoFundMe launched to raise money for the heartbroken families of the children confirmed that the six and eight-year-old victims were siblings.

It read: "Sadly, Jack (aged 10) and a young boy (aged 11) lost their lives on Sunday, 11th December 2022.

"Another young boy (aged 8) passed away in the early hours of the morning on Monday, 12th December 2022

"The younger brother of the 8-year-old, aged 6, remained in critical condition until Wednesday, 14th December 2022, when sadly, he gave up his fight and gained his wings."

It's believed that one of the boys is also the cousin of the brothers.

The fundraiser revealed that the dad of one of the four victims entered the icy lake in an attempt to save them.

Describing the incident, it said: "Our hearts are broken for the four Little Princes.

"On Sunday, 11th December 2022, a group of children played in a local park near an open lake. Being children and adventurous, they forgot the dangers taught by their parents and risked going onto the icy lake.

"Four boys fell through the ice and into the lake. The frantic father of one of the lads and a dog walker entered the lake to try and help the boys. The emergency and rescue services arrived promptly and began the rescue."

Jack, the 10-year-old to have died in the incident, is said to have been making a brave attempt to save the other boys.

His aunt, Charlotte McIlmurray, posted on Facebook: "The 10-year-old boy is my nephew. He saw one go through the ice and he ran and tried to save them.

“Our prayers and thoughts are with the other family. We are just broken over it.

“To find out he died trying to save three lads… That just sums him up. He was amazing.”

Emergency services were called to reports that a number of children had fallen into the lake on Sunday, as they arrived members of the emergency services entered the water themselves in a frantic rescue attempt.

One police officer was treated for hypothermia after attempting to punch through the ice to save the children, it was confirmed.

Four children were pulled from the water and suffered cardiac arrests, they were rushed to hospital on blue lights, but sadly none of them have survived.
