Brit tourist, 27, plunges 6,000ft as parachute fails while paragliding in Turkey

A British tourist plunged nearly 6,000 feet while paragliding on holiday after his parachute failed – and miraculously survived.

Angus George Beaton, 27, was on Babadag Mountain in the popular tourist resort of Oludeniz in Turkey when the incident happened.

He took off from a 5,905 foot-high runway before the unthinkable happened and the chute failed to deploy.

The holidaymaker then descended rapidly and hit the ground, crashing into rocks.

An emergency call was made and officers from the Gendarmerie Search and Rescue Battalion Command and the National Medical Rescue Team rushed to the scene, searching for Angus.

Luckily they managed to find him quickly, load him onto a stretcher and transport him to the nearby Fethiye State Hospital.

Angus is now reportedly in a non-life-threatening condition.

Doctors treating his injuries found that he had suffered several fractures in the crash.

Angus' lucky escape comes just days after another British tourist died in a paragliding accident on the very same mountain.

Frank Lally, 62, smashed into rocks on October 4.

He too was rushed to the Fethiye State Hospital but sadly passed away as a result of his serious injuries.

Turkey is known for being one of the best places in the world for paragliding. The Babadag Mountain based in Turkey is one the highest commercial launch sites anywhere in the world.

According to a report by the National Library of Medicine, the injury rate of paragliding is lower than any other adventure or extreme sports, but fatal accidents occur at a higher rate compared to most.
