POLL: Do you agree Brexit was ‘bound to fail’ from the outset?
Lord Heseltine has claimed that following Boris Johnson’s resignation and the Partgate report it is time “for the British people to be told the truth” about the UK’s withdrawal from the European Union.
The former deputy prime minister under John Major said that the “mood is changing” in politics and accused leaders of “hiding from the damage” caused by Brexit.
Writing for The Independent the keen Remainer explained: “There is a growing awareness of the deception that has taken place and the lies that underpinned it.”
He claimed Brexit was “bound to fail” from the outset, adding: “The Brexit case from the outset was never based on reasoned arguments or detailed policies. The diet was one of slogans interwoven with the familiar targets of the mob: the civil service, foreigners, immigrants, [and] Brussels.
“The time to recreate our position at the centre of Europe has arrived.” Lord Heseltine has continually called for the UK to rejoin the bloc, telling Remainers to “never give up” trying.

On Saturday, Tory MP Tobias Ellwood said that the Government should pursue closer ties with Europe and that the UK is “going to need a better Brexit deal” with the bloc.
Almost seven years on from the Brexit referendum, a YouGov survey has shown that Brexit regret among Leave voters is at a record high with more than a third saying that Brexit has been more of a failure than a success.
