Newlyweds ‘processing tragedy’ after 10 wedding guests die in horrific bus crash

A newlywed couple are still processing the tragedy of 10 of their wedding guests dying after their reception in a horrific bus crash.

Mitchell Gaffney and Madeleine Edsell had tied the knot at a service in Hunter Valley, Australia before one of the country's worst-ever road crashes.

A total of 10 people were killed in the crash, and a further 25 were injured just 10 minutes into a journey transporting them from the wedding venue to their hotel.

Newlyweds Mitchell and Madeleine have since paid their respects to those who died, with the duo "processing this tragedy" which followed the "glorious" wedding reception.

They said: "While we appreciate the outpouring of love and support from the community, we ask that the media respect our privacy while we grieve.

"Our primary focus at this time is processing this tragedy, and supporting our family and friends, which is why we’d like to formally decline any requests for media interviews."

The groom's parents have since spoken out about the incident, which has "shattered many lives", with John Gaffney writing a LinkedIn post regarding the incident, LADBible reported.

He wrote: "It was a glorious occasion until news of the bus crash with ten people losing their lives came within a few hours that has shattered many lives. Hopefully something positive can come out of this tragedy.

"Fifty years ago the fitting and wearing of seat belts became compulsory in Australia for all occupants of motor cars saving countless lives since.

"Whilst my wife and I can’t do this on our own we believe ultimately everyone who rides a bus should have access to a seatbelt and be compelled by laws to wear them."

John and wife Carolyn both called for seatbelts to be provided on buses, with the mother of the groom taking to Facebook calling for them to be made "compulsory."

Bus driver Brett Andrew Button has been charged with 10 counts of dangerous driving occasioning death, one count of negligent driving and driving in a dangerous manner.
