One MP was even reported as being forced to intervene and “pulled away” Sir Keir after he reacted with fury to the Prime Minister’s suggestion he had called for the UK to remain under the rules of the EU drugs regulator. In PMQs Boris Johnson claimed Britain’s Covid-19 vaccine programme would still be at the “starting blocks” under Sir Keir Starmer, as he advocated the UK staying in the European Medicines Agency.
Sir Keir described the remarks as “complete nonsense” and “a pre-prepared gag” with no basis in fact.
He added: “The Prime Minister knows I’ve never said that, from this despatch box or anywhere else, the truth escapes him.”
The Labour leader is reported to have lashed out at Mr Johnson following the exchange, angrily confronting him just outside the Chamber.
Labour Whip Chris Matheson was said to have stepped in and urged his leader to walk away.
However, while the MP confirmed the pair talked following the Commons debate but described accusations he had to pull the Labour leader away as “b***cks”.
He said: “It’s absolute b***cks. There was a brief chat and then Keir and I left together.
“Nothing more to it than that.”
One MP who saw the exchange told The Sun Sir Keir “had a bit of a meltdown”.
Another said: “He was clearly very rattled at kept saying to the Prime Minister ‘it’s not true, it’s not true’.”
Sir Keir’s spokesman said he was “not aware of the incident”.
