Lord Frost will appear before peers from the Protocol on Ireland/Northern Ireland Sub-Committee to answer questions on the trouble caused to businesses in Northern Ireland. The peers have previously attempted to block the Brexit process and overruled the UK’s Internal Market Bill last year. Amid concern the bill would break international law, peers voted 433 to 165 to remove a section of the bill which would interfere with an international agreement.

Due to the issues caused by the protocol, Lord Frost has called on the EU to change its approach with the UK.

Speaking last week, the peer insisted the protocol itself allows for alterations, which must be made to ensure the integrity of the Good Friday Agreement.

Lord Frost appeared before the Stormont Assembly’s Executive Office last Friday.

While there, he called on the EU to find a new balance to resolve issues caused by the protocol.

Lord Frost also claimed the EU was being unreasonable in its persistence with forcing the UK to align to European law.

He said: “Their solution is ‘why don’t you adopt our rules, then there won’t be a problem’.

“We’re accused of being ideological but it seems to me, equally ideological to say ‘why don’t you just adopt our laws?’

“It is a little tense at the moment. Nobody wants that but the protocol issues are at the core.

“There is a big prize if we can get this right, it does need both sides to take the situation seriously and fix the problems that currently exist.”

7.23am update: David Frost to appear before lords sub-committee

Lord Frost is set to appear before peers from the Protocol on Ireland/Northern Ireland Sub-Committee today to answer questions on the trouble caused to businesses.

The peers have previously attempted to meddle in the Government’s Brexit plans and rejected elements of the Internal Market Bill last week.

Despite some of the previous actions from the peers, Lord Frost insisted the EU has taken an ideological approach to the protocol.

He said last week: “It is a little tense at the moment. Nobody wants that but the protocol issues are at the core.

“There is a big prize if we can get this right, it does need both sides to take the situation seriously and fix the problems that currently exist.”
