The Defence Secretary also noted that: “Superpowers have lost wars before.”

Mr Wallace spoke as defence ministers from around 50 nations met in Brussels yesterday to discuss what extra support they can provide to Kyiv.

Nato Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg said the priority was air defence systems. The UK will continue supplying missiles for air defence platforms sent to Ukraine, it is understood.

Western support has been crucial in helping Ukraine repel Russian forces. And in recent days, the US and Germany have confirmed they are sending President Zelensky’s forces advanced air defence systems.

Mr Wallace said Putin’s forces are losing because of their leadership’s flawed “strategic assumptions”.

He said Putin “has got in his back pocket millions of people he can shove into a meat grinder with no rules, no regard for human lives and innocent people. If that is successful, that will send a message across the world that that’s how you win wars. The international community cannot accept that.”
