The former Labour MP said the matter was being reported to Police Scotland. He tweeted: “Breaking: A threat against my life has just been posted on Twitter by a Scottish Nationalist extremist. My colleagues are currently formally reporting it to you @policescotland.”

His chilling revelation came just hours after he said Scotland’s First Minister must resign after she was found to have misled parliament.

He said Nicola Sturgeon, the leader of the Scottish National Party (SNP) “has to go away”.

Mr Galloway, an outspoken opponent of Scottish independence posted a video on Twitter for his 366,000 followers.

He urged Scots not to give their vote to Ms Sturgeon’s party in the upcoming Holyrood elections.

He said: “As I predicted, nationalism hasn’t gone away, the SNP hasn’t gone away but Nicola Sturgeon has to go away.

“The people of Scotland cannot have the guilty party sitting in government. So on May 6 you have to act.”
