Mr Grimes has ridiculed Labour for claiming the party has been “listening” to the electorate, telling TalkRADIO host Julia Hartley-Brewer: “They’ve been saying this for over a decade.” It comes as Sir Keir Starmer faces mounting criticism of his leadership of the Labour Party on the back of further election woes. Mr Grimes argued on the issues of Brexit, BLM and immigration, the Labour Party had stopped listening to voters.

The political commentator told talkRADIO: “The Labour Party keeps saying they are listening to us. Listening to us so intently Julia.

“They have been saying this for a decade now, over a decade now.

“They dismissed concern around immigration as being bigotry.

“They tried everything they could to overturn Brexit.

“Working with John Bercow in what was I think a parliament of pigmies and then they were bending the knew to a radical Marxist group that was involved him wanton acts of criminality.

“If that’s listening Julia I would hate to see what ignoring looks like.

He added: “Up here in County Durham the fact that Labour took people for granted for such a long time is something that you hear time and time again.

“Brexit did absolute wonders in exposing that contempt that the Labour Party, and to be fair other politicians hold for the voters that actually backed them for their entire voting life.”

Tony Blair 'is a winner' for Labour says Jeffrey Archer

It comes after Jeffrey Archer has backed Tony Blair to return to UK politics as the author savaged the direction of the Labour Party under Sir Keir Starmer.

The debate raged after GMB host Susanna Reid questioned whether the Labour Party would want a former leader “imposing” his ideas.

Mr Archer snapped at host GMB Susana Reid host: “Wait a moment he won three elections in a row or have you forgotten that?!”

“But he is not the leader,” replied Susanna.

“But he is a winner!” fired back the former politician.

Lord Archer also clashed with fellow guest Ayesha Hazarika over whether Keir Starmer “was too scared of the voters” to promote prominent Labour backbenchers into the Shadow Cabinet.

Ms Hazarika said “Right now the Labour Party is so lacking in ideas I would take some ideas from anyone.”

Lord Archer replied: “You had a reshuffle and you leave on the backbenches, Hillary Benn and Yvette Cooper two of the most able people in politics today, why aren’t they on the frontbench?”
