Labour slammed as David Lammy to double down on EU pledge at ‘Remoaner’ event

Grant Shapps says that Starmer wants to ‘reopen’ Brexit

Labour has come under fire as David Lammy is set to double down on a pledge to prioritise the EU.

The shadow foreign secretary last week admitted Brussels would be the party’s “number one priority” for foreign policy in comments seized upon by the Tories.

But the Labour frontbencher, who backed Remain and a second referendum, is set to reiterate the message in a speech at an event organised by the Best for Britain campaign group, which is pushing to rejoin the EU.

In a speech at the Trade Unlocked Conference in Birmingham, Mr Lammy will say: “Last week the Conservative Party press office attacked me for saying that improving our relationship with the EU will be a priority of the next Labour government.

“I have no qualms about repeating this. Reconnecting Britain must start by reconnecting with our European neighbours.

“Because the EU are our biggest trading partners. And our allies as we face war on our continent.

“If you do not think Britain’s relationship with Europe is of fundamental importance to our future, you are living in a fantasy.”

Mr Lammy will insist Labour would not rejoin the EU, single market or customs union if Sir Keir Starmer – who attempted to block Brexit 48 times – takes power at the next general election.

But Conservative Party deputy chairman Lee Anderson warned Labour would push to return Britain to the bloc.

Mr Anderson said: “This is typical Labour: doubling down on their plans to make rejoining the EU their top priority at a pro-Brussels bash organised by arch-remoaners.

“Instead of spending their time at leftie love-ins, Labour MPs should hit the doorsteps in Ashfield to see if real people agree with their plan to suck up to Brussels.

“Only the Conservative government can be trusted to protect Brexit and deliver on the issues that matter to real people. Halving inflation. Growing the economy. Reducing debt. Cutting waiting lists. Stopping the boats.”

Earlier this year, Mr Lammy advocated for a “Britain Reconnected” that would be “outside of the EU but a leader in Europe once again”.

And speaking this month, Mr Lammy said Brussels would be Labour’s “number one priority” in terms of rebuilding the UK’s reputation as a world leader post-Brexit.

He told Politics Home: “We’ve been clear that we are not entering back into the single market, but clearly, there’s much that we can do in partnership with the European Union.”
