The BBC’s Vicki Young grilled Boris Johnson on the delay in placing India on the red list as well as cancelling his scheduled trip to the nation. The Prime Minister explained that the coronavirus variant sweeping through India has not yet been identified as a variant of concern.

Ms Young said: “In the past few weeks tens of thousands of people have travelled between India and the UK.

“Why did it take so long to put India on the red list?

“There are some who wonder why it took you so long to cancel your planned trip there.”

Mr Johnson replied: “The decision on India was taken by the JVC really in response to the state of the pandemic there.

“You will recall that at the moment what we are seeing in India is a result of a variant under investigation.

“It has not yet been deemed a variant of concern.

“I think that is why there has been a delay.”
