BBC Breakfast presenter Matt Taylor explained sunny spells are expected to break through later on Wednesday and the following days which will bring an end to several grey and gloomy days. The weatherman says winds will remove clouds and leave behind clear skies with some gusts reaching around 40mph in some parts of the country. Mr Taylor also revealed the Shetlands could see winds up to 70mph with most of the south seeing dry temperatures for a milder weekend ahead.

Speaking on BBC Breakfast, Mr Taylor revealed the icy temperatures experienced earlier this week would begin to lift as we head towards the weekend.

He explained: “It’s gonna be a bit of a day of change weather-wise and I know some of these days have been particularly grey and gloomy.

“But a better chance to see that gloom breaking up through today, a bit more sunshine at times across the country.

“Still a fair amount of cloud, but the flip side will be later in the day Scotland, Northern Ireland especially we’re going to see some outbreaks of rain and some particularly strong winds.”

The BBC presenter then explained that the gusts will clear up the skies and will make things milder.

He added: “It’s that breeze which will start to break up some of the clouds we have.

“A few splashes of rain this morning in western Scotland a light drizzle, but most places dry and it is not until later that rain spreads this way.

“But a breeze does pick up and notice the cloud where it’s particularly gloomy at the moment in southernmost counties.

“It will start to break a bit more readily, so as I said some sunny spells coming through and those winds coming in from a general southwesterly direction…

“It is going to feel milder out there, the winds not desperately strong though across the southern half of the country, only gusting around 10 to 20 miles an hour.

“But the further north we get the stronger those winds with the rain this evening edging into the north of Northern Ireland, north of Glasgow some pretty heavy rain across the southern highlands at this stage.

“But we could see winds gusts 40-50mph in the west and it’s around Orkney and Shetland where we could see 60 or 70mph gusts, if not a bit more.”

Mr Taylor said these winds could cause travel disruption and urged caution on the roads.

He continued: “But as we go into Thursday, a lot more sunshine around, cloud lasting the longest in the south.

“Some rain at times on Friday and Saturday in the north and west.

“Many places dry but into the start of the weekend, it is looking especially milder.”
