Brits brace for stormy weekend deluge with lightning to strike

UK Weather: MET Office predicts temperatures of up to 26 degrees

Thundery showers are expected this weekend with high temperatures that could reach 30C in some parts of the UK. According to forecasts, thunder and lightning is expected on Saturday afternoon and could last until Sunday afternoon. It will follow a week of dry, hot weather with the mercury hovering at around 21C.

Rain is also expected on Sunday, along with thundery conditions.

Nicola Maxey, of Met Office, told Express.co.uk: “We will see a transition in the weather for the UK from late on Friday for those in the southwest, with warm air from the south increasing the chances of some thundery showers in parts of Devon and Cornwall.

“The risk of thundery outbreaks increases and spreads further north and east through the weekend, with the possibility of hail and gusty winds possible in some places.

“Temperatures will also rise as a plume of warm air is drawn in from the south. Temperatures over the weekend could peak around 30C in some parts of England and remain well above average during night-times.”

The Met Office has also warned that there could be “localised impacts and disruption” this weekend as weather conditions change.

Ms Maxey added: “The likelihood potential for heavy and thundery showers, could bring some localised impacts and disruption in the far southwest from as early as late Friday, but more widely into the weekend, though it is not possible to be definitive about exact details this far from the potential event.”

The Met Office said it expects the hottest temperatures of the year so far to be reached by the weekend.

The threshold for a heatwave is different across the UK, but in some areas it is classified as hitting highs of 25C to 28C across a three-day period.

Saturday will likely be the warmest day, with temperatures possibly hitting 30C in and around London.

Simon Partridge, forecaster for the Met Office, said: “It will get warmer but there may well be more cloud with heavy, thundery showers mixed in as well.

“There will still be plenty of sunshine around, but it will come with much muggier nights.

“We continue with showers on Sunday and Monday and it will turn a little bit cooler again.”
