Chilling moment road rage driver pulls out gun and fires 11 times at other car

A furious driver who lost his temper with another motorist was filmed by his own dashcam pulling out his gun and firing 11 times.

Eric Popper, 30, riddled both his own car and the other motorist's vehicle with bullets during the heated incident in Miami, Florida, in June last year.

He cut off the other driver, who then began tailgating him and threw an object out of the window and towards his car, according to investigators.

In the clip, an agitated-looking Popper pulls out his gun and then begins shooting, making the glass around him shatter and explode.

He then pulls over and calls the police, telling officers the other driver had shot at him and he "returned fire".

Investigators said the other driver was unarmed and footage from a public bus on the same highway appears to show a dark object falling onto the road between the two vehicles.

"He pulled out his gun in self-defense and was justified in pulling out his gun," Popper's attorney Robert Gershman said.

Nobody was injured in the shooting but photographs show the bodywork of both Popper's black SUV and the other car punctured with numerous bullet holes.

Popper turned himself in and provided police with the dashcam video.

He now faces two felony charges that carry up to 15 years in prison and has a hearing date in April, US media reports.

"Your road rage is serious and can lead to both criminal and civil charges being filed against you," attorney Areva Martin said.

Road rage is the third leading cause of car accidents in Florida, according to Neufeld Law Firm.

This means it ranks behind both negligence and distracted driving in the number of crashes it causes.

If you suspect another driver is following you you should try to remain calm, avoid eye contact, and drive to the nearest police station, advised the legal experts.
