Deputy fire chief Jeremy Virgil steps down following Arvada DUI traffic stop over the weekend

The deputy chief of the Denver Fire Department was pulled over in Arvada this weekend in a driving-under-the-influence traffic stop. Jeremy Vigil, on Monday, resigned from his role as deputy chief, the second-highest position in the department with more than 1,000 employees.

“As the Deputy Chief of Denver Fire Department, it is imperative to communicate to all members that effective immediately I am resigning from the role of Deputy Chief,” Vigil said in a memorandum provided by the department. “Some actions and decisions I made over the weekend are not in alignment with the visions and values of our organization.  This Department has incredibly dedicated, loyal, and strong people leading the way.  Please continue to endeavor to make this Department a leader in the fire service, and thank you for your contributions and the sacrifices that you make.”

The memorandum was read at fire department role calls for three consecutive shifts. Vigil is second in command to Chief Desmond Fulton.

“We are providing support and resources for chief Vigil should he ask,” said Capt. Greg Pixley, a department spokesman.

Vigil was driving a department vehicle when he was stopped, Pixley said. The fire department is cooperating with the police in the DUI investigation.
