Matthew Reeves has been executed after the US Supreme Court lifted a stay of execution

He had been executed by the state of Alabama with his time of death being at 9:24 p.m.

Matthew had no final words during his last moment.

He was sentenced to death for the November 27, 1996 murder of Willie Johnson in Dallas County, Alabama.

Prison officials issued that Matthew had refused made no special meal request, however he did request a bottle of Sprite.

Matthew's attorney's have said he's intellectually disabled, while a defense expert said he reads at a first grade level and has the language competency of a 4-year-old.

The scheduled time for the execution was delayed from 6pm as the Supreme Court weighed taking execution off the table for him.

After much deliberation the US supreme court voted 5-4 to let the execution by lethal injection proceed.

It has been reported that in 1996 Willie had given Matthew and others a ride after picking them up on the side of a rural highway in Selma.

Willie was robbed of $360 and died of a shotgun blast to the neck.

At the time of the murder, Matthew was 18-year-old and following Willie's death he allegedly danced and mimicked the death at a party with blood still on his hands.

.A witness added that he bragged about getting a “teardrop” tattoo to signify that he’d killed someone at the party.

Prosecution and defense experts tested his intellectual disability and found his IQ to be in the high 60s or low 70s.

Inmates of Alabama’s death row had a chance to sign a form stating which execution method they would prefer – in this case nitrogen hypoxia was the chosen method.

Matthew's lawyers argued he was not allowed able to do so as an intellectually disabled poor reader.

John Palombi a lawyer for Matthew Reeves said in a statement: "The immense authority of the Supreme Court should be used to protect its citizens, not to strip them of their rights without explanation."

Matthew Reeves was the second person to be given the death penalty in 2022.
