Ex equalities minister Kemi Badenoch enters bid to be the next Prime Minister

Kemi Badenoch has entered the bid to be the next Prime Minister.

The MP resigned from her post as equalities minister on Wednesday (July 6) during a disastrous 48 hours for Boris Johnson as dozens of Tory colleagues stepped down.

Kemi, who represents Saffron Waldes, told The Times that if she successfully secured the position, she wants to run a "limited Government focused on the essentials".

Her policies would also include lowering taxes alongside "tight spending".

Other Conservative politicians are are rushing to take sides in the race to become after Rishi Sunak declared he has set his sights on the top job.

Rishi announced his bid for leadership on Twitter, saying: “Let’s restore trust, rebuild the economy and reunite the country.”

Foreign Secretary Liz Truss is also widely expected to run for leader.

Tory MPs Chloe Smith and Julian Knight both expressed their support for the senior Cabinet minister on Friday, although she is yet to launch a bid.

It comes after many MPs resigned from their official duties this week as they protested against Boris Johnson's handling of the scandal surrounding his deputy chief whip Chris Pincher.

She tweeted her resignation letter, which she co-signed with four other ministers, ahead of Boris Johnson resigning.

She wrote: “With great regret, I resigned from the government this morning. It has been an honour being equalities and local government minister. It was a privilege to have worked with so many great ministerial colleagues and civil servants in these roles.”

Kemi was joined by education minister Alex Bughurt, parliamentary under-secretary for levelling up Neil O’Brien, media minister Julia Lopez and industry minister Lee Rowley.

The group wrote to Boris Johnson: “You have had the most difficult task in a generation. We hugely admire your fortitude, stamina and enduring optimism. You can be rightly proud of the significant decisions which you have, by common acclamation, got right.
