Former Marriage and Family Therapist Sentenced to 4 Years for Sexually Abusing 7 Patients

Former marriage and family therapist, Edgar Gustavo Villamarin, of Pasadena, California, was sentenced to four years in state prison on Thursday for sexually abusing seven of his patients.

The former therapist, 66, is also being ordered to register as a sex offender for the rest of his life, Los Angeles County Deputy District Attorney Lisa Daruty revealed in a press release. 

The seven patients were abused by Villamarin from 2014 to 2018, according to Daruty.

Villamarin's sentencing comes months after he pleaded no contest in Sept. 2019 to the seven counts of sexual abuse he was charged with.

At the time, he entered a plea arrangement to be charged with sexual battery by fraud – a lesser charge than sexual abuse.

Villamarin was first arrested in November 2018 after a woman reported she was sexually assaulted during an appointment, according to a police record obtained by KTLA. A second victim later reported a similar incident during a visit to his office in 2016.

The former marriage and family therapist first received his license in 1982. It was revoked in 1998 and then reinstated for unknown reasons, Pasadena Now reported.

As of Oct. 2020, Villamarin's license was still valid. But according to Pasadena Now, a judge barred him from engaging in any activity for which a license is required pending further court order.

A lawyer for Villamarin could not immediately be identified.
