A three-year-old girl became the second Brazilian child to die from a scorpion bite in over a month after she was attacked while she slept at her home in Brazil.
Maria Brito was stung on September 25 and was immediately hospitalized before she died from cardiac arrest on October 1.
‘My princess, how much you will be missed,’ a family member wrote on social media. ‘Thank you for your beautiful time here on earth, we love you very much. With a broken heart, see you soon Maria Fernanda.’
Brito was initially treated at Ribas do Rio Pardo Municipal Hospital in her hometown of Ribas do Rio Pardo and then transferred to Mato Grosso do Sul Regional Hospital in Campo Grande, where doctors treated her with antivenom.
The Ribas do Rio Pardo city hall said in a statement that ‘the weakening of her heart muscles ended up causing a cardiorespiratory arrest.’

A 45-year-old man and a woman survived after they were also stung by scorpions in separate incidents the weekend of September 22-25 in Ribas do Rio Pardo.
An eight-year-old boy was also hospitalized after he was bitten by a scorpion on September 30
Brito’s death is the second in Ribas do Rio Pardo after Pyetro Arguelho died from a scorpion bite on August 22.
The five-year-old boy was at his home getting ready to leave for school the morning of August 15 when a scorpion bit him inside his shoe.

He was rushed to Ribas do Rio Pardo Municipal Hospital and treated with antivenom and then was rushed to Mato Grosso do Sul Regional Hospital after his condition worsened.
‘The toxin in the poison was very strong,’ the boy’s father, Max Jonatham, told Brazilian news outlet G1. ‘The doctor said it was still (affecting) his body, it could last up to seven to 10 days. Give his age, it was perhaps a large dose of poison.’
Residents in Ribas do Rio Pardo, a city with a population of 23,000, have complained about the increasing presence of scorpions, which is generated by humidity and heat.
The Mato Grosso do Sul Department of Health has registered 3,012 in 2023 after 3,205 were reported last year.
