The emergency services have been scrambled to a house in Arundel Avenue, on Merseyside, after thick black smoke was seen coming from a house in Liverpool following a reported explosion, prompting a major response from emergency services.

Locals reported hearing a loud noise, sounding like an explosion, at around 1.30pm today.

A spokesperson for Merseyside Fire and Rescue Service said: "MFRS received a call at 1.23pm following a house fully involved in a fire on Arundel Avenue. We arrived at the scene at 1.30pm".

"Six fire engines are currently at the scene and are using aerial appliances," they added. "Six firefighters using breathing apparatus were using hose reels to get the fire under control"

One local tweeted: "Horrendous explosion by mine on Arundel Avenue. It may have been a gas explosion and I’ll be amazed if anyone in that house survived"

Another resident said they heard the noise in their back garden and described it as sounding like a large ‘lorry crashing’ rather than an explosion.

Part of the building's roof has collapsed, and one person has reportedly been carried out by rescuers.
