In pictures: ‘Pink supermoon’ lights up sky around the world

A rare “pink supermoon” lit up the sky in the UK last night – and similarly spectacular images have been captured worldwide.

Although April’s full moon is called pink, it isn’t actually that colour and gets its name from phlox flowers that bloom in spring time.

But the supermoon status is well earned, due to how large the moon appears in the sky as it enters its closest proximity to Earth in its orbit. During this time, it appears around 14% bigger and 30% brighter.

Supermoons usually occur three to four times a year, with the next expected next month. In the meantime, take a look through a selection of stunning pictures from around the world of last night’s phenomenon.
