Injured cows airlifted off mountain by helicopter in strange video

An injured cow was given a very special ride with a spectacular view down a mountain in Switzerland ahead of an annual cattle parade.

Bizarre footage shared online captures the animal being strapped in with a mesh harness before being suspended by a length of cable below a chopper as it takes to the skies.

In the clip, the helicopter brings the creature to the lower ground of the ridges in the Klausenpass region in the centre of the country.

The transport method was used on the 10 injured cows – about 1% of the herd that stayed at the high altitude during their summer pastures.

Other fit and able livestock made their way down the mountainside by hoof.

Farmer Jonas Arnold said: "One reason for the helicopter transport is that you can't reach some pastures by car, and the other is that some cows are injured, so they don't have to walk all the way down.

"I didn't ask a cow how it feels after such a flight as it couldn't answer, but it's only a short distance and it has to keep going.

"It was only a short calm flight. I didn't notice any difference between the ones that flew and the ones that walked normally."

Jonas and other waiting farmers used guide ropes to help bring the cows to land safely, before moving them into more conventional trailers.

The group will then head to Urnerboden, a village in the Alps where they will have their annual cattle parade.

Viewers were fascinated by the helicopter ride as one joked: "The cow must be over the moon."

Another said: "I hope they get the best treatment to get back running. Speedy recovery!"

And a third noticed a cow taking a dump in the air and commented: "You know when a bird poops on you and it’s supposed to be lucky…"
