Kate Middleton to receive birthday treat only granted to three other royals

Kate Middleton will today be honoured with a special birthday tradition that only four royals are granted.

As a senior member of the family, the bells of Westminster Abbey will ring out in her name at 1pm today (January 9).

The Princess of Wales, who is turning 41, is one of the most senior royals and as such will be given the special honour.

King Charles, Queen Camilla, and Prince William are all also entitled to the privilege, but this is now where it stops following a policy change from the family.

In 2022, the custom of having the bells ring out for a number of less senior members of the family was called off in a bid to save cash in the cost of living crisis.

These days only the principals get the bells rung on their birthdays.

Discussing the call to have the bells no longer ring for more members of the family, a spokesperson for Westminster Abbey said to HELLO at the time: "The Abbey bells can be heard ringing out before services and in celebration of church festivals.

"The bells have also traditionally been rung to mark the birthdays of senior members of the Royal Family.

"Due to the financial challenges posed to the Abbey by the Covid-19 pandemic, and in consultation with Buckingham Palace, the bells will now ring only for the birthdays of HM The Queen and HRH The Prince of Wales”.

Kate has often ushered in a new year of life with quiet, family-focused affairs and this year could well be the same.

Last year, on her 40th birthday, three new portraits were released of Kate. However this year, the Princess of Wales celebrates in the middle of the saga surrounding Prince Harry’s new book, Spare.

While it is not known whether the release of the book will have any impact on the day itself, the ongoing media storm continues to rage surrounding claims made by the younger brother of her husband Prince William.
