He was joined by Prince William, 40, and Princess Kate, 41, right, as the atmosphere built in central London ahead of today’s ceremony.

His Majesty, 74, laughed when one man asked if he was “nervous" during the walkabout.

According to the Daily Mail, there’s a specific medical term for the painful-looking affliction on King Charles' fingers.

GP Chun Tang explained that they are officially known as dactylitis, adding that it’s most commonly a symptom of water retention which can be caused by numerous health conditions.

“This condition arises due to inflammation and can be a result of arthritis, multiple bacterial infections or even TB,” he explained.

“Other possibilities include high salt levels, allergic reactions, medicinal side effects, injury and autoimmune diseases”.

It followed a packed day of engagements for Charles, including a final coronation rehearsal at Westminster Abbey. More than 100 heads of state are expected at today’s celebrations.

The King and Queen Camilla will travel in their horse-drawn Diamond Jubilee State Coach. The royals will arrive at 11am for the two-hour ceremony in front of 2,200 guests, led by Archbishop of Canterbury Justin Welby.

Those taking part will include the Massed Pipes and Drums of the Irish Guards, proudly led by Irish wolfhound dog Séamus.

James Shaw, the Brigade Major of the Household Division, said: “It’s an incredibly proud day for the Irish Guards to have their much loved Regimental Mascot on parade.”
