Met Office extends yellow warning for snow and ice as big freeze continues

The UK's weather woes are set to continue this week as the Met Office extended its yellow warning for snow and ice caused by the Arctic snap.

More dangerous weather is set to come as the big freeze keeps its grip on the country, with temperatures already reaching as low as -17.3C in Braemar, Scotland.

Scots have been told to prepare for up to 10cm of snow on higher ground in the Highlands, with some schools already being forced to close and areas left without power.

The Met Office has extended a yellow warning for snow and ice, covering northern Scotland and north east England, until noon on Friday.

Snow and ice warnings are also in place in the South West until 10am on Wednesday (December 14).

An ice warning is in place in eastern England until noon on Wednesday (December 14), while there is a yellow ice warning in parts of Northern Ireland over the same period.

Met Office forecasters are also warning of snow, ice and fog across Britain, and the white stuff could strike England, Wales, Northern Ireland and Scotland on Sunday.

Met Office Chief Meteorologist, Matthew Lehnert, said: “In many places daytime temperatures will struggle to get above freezing, while overnight temperatures have the potential to drop below -10C in rural parts of Scotland.

"Warnings for snow and ice will continue to be a feature of the forecast until the end of the week."

Met Office spokesman Becky White said areas covered by the extended warning should expect snow, and that there will be a risk of ice across the country over the next few days.

She added: "There is a band of rain moving in from the South West, but it may turn into snow as it reaches land."

Motorists, particularly in rural areas, have been told to beware of "treacerous" icy roads, with the RAC urging drivers to delay their plans if necessary “following a big refreeze overnight".
