One killed, one injured in Castle Rock shooting

A person was killed and another was injured in a shooting after a fight early Tuesday morning in Castle Rock.

The alleged shooter, Miguel Mercado, 20, has been arrested on charges of second-degree murder and attempted second-degree murder, the Castle Rock Police Department said in a news release.

Castle Rock police were called to a shooting at an apartment complex near Castle Rock Parkway and Castlegate Drive West after 1 a.m. Tuesday.

Two people were reportedly shot after a fight in the complex’s parking lot. One of the victims died and the other was taken to a hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

Mercado allegedly initially fled the scene, but officers through interviews identified him and later located him in a vehicle in downtown Castle Rock about 10 a.m. Tuesday. He was arrested without incident, police said.

Investigators are still looking into the relationship between Mercado and the victims.
