Poundland is to open and relocate 50 new stores in a move that will create up to 500 jobs.

The expansion plans will see the budget retailer, owned by Pepco, open half a million square feet of new retail space between now and September. 

The firm has confirmed eight openings between this month and March, whilst another six new stores are in the final stage of lease negotiations.

Poundland’s biggest ever Glasgow store – at 18,380 square feet – will open in March.

Stores in Newport, Llantrisant and Rotherham will be relocated from next month until March.

Other openings planned for March include full-size outlets in Aldershot in Hampshire and Castle Bromwich in the West Midlands, as well as a convenience store in East Dulwich, south-east London.

Another 26 stores are planned from April until June, and a further 13 will open in the second half of this year. 

Additional locations will be announced when agreements with landlords have been secured. 

Poundland’s managing director Barry Williams said: ‘We know how customers appreciate the effort we’ve made in the last few years to transform our offer, offering them more of what they want to buy, week-in, week-out. 

‘That transformation means we have to step up our search for the best locations to bring the best of Poundland to customers across the UK and that’s precisely what we’ll do in 2023. 

‘We will continue to work hard to find the right locations that suit the range of Poundland formats we now offer – from small neighbourhood convenience stores to our large destination stores.’ 

The new openings come after Poundland opened eight new outlets on one day – dubbed ‘Super Saturday – last December.

The stores opened in areas including Rainham in Kent, Swindon in Wiltshire, Aylesbury in Buckinghamshire, Tipton in the West Midlands and Craigavon, Northern Ireland.

It reported a 14.3 per cent rise in revenue to £4.14 billion, helped by the opening of a total of 516 new stores.

Like-for-like sales went up by 5.2 per cent.

It began selling clothing and home goods in 2017, in a bid to compete with rivals including Asda and Wilko.

But, despite its name, by 2019 more than a quarter of items were not being sold for £1. By the end of 2022, this had doubled. 

Pepco said that 58 per cent of items sold in the year to the end of September were outside the £1 price point.
