The three teens slain by a school shooter in Michigan yesterday have been identified by police.

Police also confirmed that weapon used by the suspect had been purchased by his father four days before.

Hana St Juliana, 14, Tate Myre, 16, and Madisyn Baldwin, 17, all died during Tuesday's shooting rampage at Oxford High School in Detroit, according to the Oakland County Sheriff’s Office.

Hana and Madisyn were dead when officers arrived at the scene.

Tate died in a patrol car as police attempted to rush him to hospital. He was the school's standout American football star and, according to classmates, died because her heroically tried to disarm the shooter.

Madiysn was the eldest of three siblings and had already been accepted into several universities, her family told ClickOnDetroit.

“This kind of thing can happen anywhere and sadly it happened even in a sweet quiet community like Oxford,” Oakland County Sheriff Michael J Bouchard said at a press conference on Tuesday.

Authorities also confirmed that the 15-year-old suspect wounded seven other students, aged between 14 and 17, as well as a 47-year-old teacher.

Three students – two girls aged 14 and 17 and a 15-year-old boy – remain in a critical condition.

The suspect is being held at a juvenile detention centre and has been placed om suicide watch.

Bouchard added that he is refusing to speak to investigators and has retained a lawyer at the direction of his parents.

A 9mm Sig Sauer pistol was used in the shooting, with ammunition later found by canine units concealed in a bag.

The boy's phone and several other items have now been seized by police following the execution of a search warrant at his home.
